LSSI One of 18 Nonprofits Receiving 2nd Round Grant Funding from Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund to Support Basic Needs of Clients

Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) was one of 18 nonprofit organizations to receive round 2 funding from the Illinois COVID Response Fund (ICRF). LSSI received $350,000 and will use the grant money to provide basic needs to its clients in communities outside Chicago. LSSI served 50,000 people last year at 50 sites around the state.

The fund, which was established by the United Way of Illinois and the Alliance of Illinois Community Foundations in collaboration with the office of the Governor, today also announced it has raised more than $30 million from over 2,400 donors since its launch on March 26.

"Of those households served by LSSI last year, 95% reported annual incomes of under $25,000, and the COVID-19 Pandemic has hit families we serve particularly hard,” said Mark A. Stutrud, LSSI President and CEO. “Our staff are seeing first-hand the additional hardships our clients are facing. This grant from the Illinois COVID-19 Response Fund will help us provide timely, critical basic needs support for individuals and families LSSI serves in communities across Illinois."

Specifically for LSSI, the funding will be used in a variety of ways. For children and families, the grant will enable LSSI to provide groceries and supplies (such as diapers, healthy snacks for children); rent/mortgage payments; utility payments; and additional household finances. The funds will help children and families served by LSSI offices in the following communities: Canton, Champaign, Danville, Galesburg, Moline, Sterling/Dixon, Peoria, Rockford, and Southern Illinois. LSSI also will use this funding at its apartments for low-income seniors and residences for people with developmental disabilities, located in Beardstown, Danville, Decatur, DeKalb, Dixon, Freeport, Rockford, Rochelle, Sterling, Stockton, and Taylorville.
