2010 Women's Network Fashion Show Scrapbook

On May 1, 2010, the Women's Network of LSSI hosted its 26th Annual Forget-Me-Not Brunch and Fashion Show at The Meadows Club in Rolling Meadows. The Women's Network is a group of volunteers that promotes and supports the programs of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI).

For the sixth year, the fashion show benefited Bonding with Books, raising $54,000 in 2010 for this literacy program offered at LSSI's five Chicago Head Start sites in Humboldt Park, North Austin, Rogers Park, Uptown and West Englewood. From October to May, the program provides one book a month free for each of approximately 285 preschool children. During that month, classroom activities and field trips relate to the theme of the book, such as a trip to a fire station when the book is about fire fighters. The program encourages families to read together, and the books build a foundation for a home library.

"Since the Bonding with Books family literacy program first began in the fall of 2005, it has had an enormously positive impact on the children's readiness for early language and early reading and their readiness to enter kindergarten," says Carol Endemann, who oversees LSSI's Head Start programs. She continues, "Parents have also enthusiastically embraced the program and look forward to reading new and exciting books that align with their child's classroom curriculum."

The fashion show featured clothing from local designers, department stores and specialty shops. Attendees at the event also had an opportunity to shop at special gift boutiques that sold designer and handcrafted accessories and jewelry. There also was a raffle for three exciting prizes, including $500 in cash.

The event is held each year on the Saturday before Mother's Day, and many guests return year-after-year to celebrate this day at the fashion show. Next year, the Forget-Me-Not Brunch and Fashion Show will be held on May 7, 2011.
